5 THINGS YOU CAN’T MISS IN TAIPEI, TAIWAN

Taipei is a city many people come to on a layover or for the weekend. It is a city filled with beautiful colors, night markets, many things to do, amazing food and one of the tallest buildings in the world. Living here for 8 weeks I realized it has way more to offer than what anyone can do in just a weekend. But figuring out what to see in Taipei can be difficult, here are my top 5 things do in Taipei if you have more than a weekend, or if you want to do something not so touristy.

Hot Springs

Taipei has nearly a dozen different hot springs around the city limits. Some of them are completely outdoors, some have private rooms and some are within nature. Each one is slightly different with the sizes, location, the number of people and looks. Don't be afraid to take your bathing suit (or not) and soak up for a few hours. You won't regret it.

Juifen

This famous town was the inspiration for the Japanese animated film Spirited Away. When I first learned about this town I had no interest in going only because I am not an anime fan. But don't let that stop you from visiting this unique town. The town itself is absolutely beautiful. It is filled with colors (and a ton of people if you go during peak season), a lot of fun shops, street food, and an awesome hiking trail.

Release lanterns at Shifen or Pingxi

If you make it to Juifen you have to stop by the nearby towns of Shifen or Pingxi. At these two towns, you can get a taste of traditional Taiwanese tradition. They are both towns filled with small shops and local food. To get a real feel of tradition write your wishes on a lantern and release them into the sky. Go to one or both, they're worth checking out.

Maokong

This is a hidden gem and you can easily spend the entire day if you love being outdoors. The hiking trail was my absolute favorite part, a pretty simple hike, but beautiful nonetheless. There is an awesome old abandoned temple built into the hike with some of the most beautiful views. Once you get past the hike there is a beautiful teahouse opened 24 hours overlooking the beautiful tea plantation. The best part about the hike is once you're done hiking you can take the cable car (I recommend taking the see-through one if it's light out) down to the zoo and the temples.

Things to do in Taipei

Elephant Mountain

A fairly easy hike, even for beginners, it is worth every second once you reach the top. The views of the city and Taipei 101 are absolutely remarkable. Doesn't matter if you go during the day or evening it will always be busy with teenagers hanging out. It's a great photo op and a place to unwind after a long day. The views are remarkable.
